About Elvin[]

In the beginning of the show, he expresses a great deal of sexist views, He is never hateful, but his attitudes tend to follow a very old-fashioned view on gender roles, which causes a great deal of tension between him and Sondra, as well as the rest of the family (particularly Clair). While he does seem to try make up for angering the family, such as cooking them dinner, he frequently makes ignorant comments about the roles of men and women.

Over time, he does start to change his attitudes and behavior, and by the time he and Sondra get engaged, he is welcomed into the family with open arms. His change is gradual, and he continues to occasionally make ignorant comments throughout the series, but he does continue to make an effort to become more "open-minded."  He and Sondra moved into a place of their own, as shown when they babysitted the younger Huxtables. Rudy and the others wondered why their sister and brother-in-law lived in such a squalid apartment compared to the nice Huxtable home, but Elvin convinces them that he and Sondra are happy and that it is important to learn to strike out on your own as a grownup. Essentially, he has a good heart and a mouth that can get him into trouble.
